Recovery Program – Stage 2 (Al Hafi)
Stage 2 : Al Hafi Spiritual Guidance
At Spinney Hill we believe that spirituality is integral to making sustained changes. The conquering of the “nafs” (or lower self) is paramount in abstaining from drugs and alcohol for the long term. In order to do this the service the user is allocated a spiritual mentor who is proficient in the knowledge of the “nafs”. The service user is given daily “zikr” (a form of prayer) to complete and is requested to attend weekly “zikr” gatherings.
The spiritual mentor will teach the service user meditation techniques, techniques of deep breathing and spiritual mindfulness. Throughout, the service user will have recourse to contact their spiritual mentor whenever they are struggling with cravings and are having issues around controlling their “nafs”.
Another key component of the treatment plan is counselling. Spinney Hill has trained counsellors who meet with our service users each week. Many drug addicts take drugs to mask past trauma: traumas, which may, amongst others, include grief, bereavement, loss or abuse. The counsellor will work with the addict to explore the root cause of their drug use and help them to resolve it.
